In the upper portion of Taneycomo is where fly fishers tend to find success. It is accessible and wader friendly at the upper end of the lake. In this portion of the of the river only flies and artificial lures are allowed, and soft plastic baits and scented baits are prohibited. In 1997 special regulations were implemented for the area just below the dam. Rainbow Trout 12-20 inches must be released, and only one brown may be inluded in a daily limit of 4 trout–but it must be 20 inches long. This change in regulations has helped the fishery considerably and catches of 20 inches or better are not uncommon.
